  • My Mum was Known as Jean to most people and worked in the Bedwell Greengrocers for many years and the Market stall they had in the Town. Originally the Faulkners owned the Shop but eventually sold out to Tony and mum continued working there until she retired.

last year we sold Mums house to the owners of the Bedwell Kebab shop which was formerly the Greengrocers so it felt like there was a sort of connection. Mum also kept in touch with the Shoe shop owners after they moved to Frinton on Sea and were still contacting each other until a few years ago. I believe she was also called Jean.

  • My family moved to Stevenage in 1953 and lived in Hillcrest until 1955 and then a new house in Bedwell Crescent.

After Our School years at Bedwell and Barnwell Schools I went into the Building Industry.

I moved away many years ago but my parents and siblings stayed. Over the years my father and brother passed away but my dear Mum remained in the same house until she passed away last year. We were the first family to live there and this continued for 65 years.

  • I believe my grandfather, Sidney Teather, ran the shoe repair shop at Bedwell shops. He moved his family from Hampstead in the late 1950s, where he learnt the trade from Mr George Kray (distant relative of the twins), who owned a shop in Belsize Park. Would love any info / memories / pics of him or his family.

  • Hi All,
I am trying to find some info. for ancestry research about a relation. First name was Ray and he was scottish (with red hair) and worked on the buildings. He would have been a regular at the Game Keeper at the time. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Best wishes, Dee

  • My family moved to Bedwell Crescent in 1960. I have many happy memories of growing up mucking about round the park and the shops. Saturday morning pictures at the community centre sitting on the floor with Mickey Mouse or The Lone Ranger showing on the brick wall in the main hall. Mum and Dad used to go to the Old Time Dancing there too.

  • I too lived in Bedwell at 29 meadow way and went to Bedwell School just round the corner. We moved in 1963 just after the real bad weather. The house next door caught fire and we had to wait downstairs in case we needed to get out. My father worked for the rally driver Peter Harper then vauxhall motors in luton some of the kids used to meet at our house and we all had to walk nicely to school. Happy times

  • I grew up in Bedwell. We lived at 28, Meadow Way from 1955-1962, when we moved to the Old Town. Mum and Dad were Lily and Roy Aspland. Dad was a bricklayer, Mum worked at the supermarket in Bedwell shops during the winter when Dad was out of work. Bert Lowe lived in the same street; Dad and Bert worked on the building sites together. All the kids went to Bedwell School. Joan Miller was a neighbour. I was Linda Aspland, now Linda Zumm, and I live in Canada.

  • I lived in Ramsdell and had to go to the shops most day and I remember sitting outside the Game keeper asking penny for the guys. Going into the little community centre on a Saturday morning to watch cartoons. Loved all the little privately owned shops and asking Mr Row [Rowe. Ed.] from the chippy for the batter bits scraps.(1967 through to 1985) still have Bedwell in my hart .

  • My Dad, Richard (Dick) Dayton, was the Manager of the Fine Fare grocery shop at Bedwell Crescent for a number of years, and I was his ‘Saturday Girl’ there for quite a time. We moved to Stevenage from East Ham in 1956 after he got a job with C H Kaye, family grocery shop, which later sold out to Fine Fare. He was also the Manager of the Rockingham Way and Burwell Road shops in Stevenage

  • Cox’s was the butchers. Frank the butcher and my friend and I at 14/15 had a terrible crush on the young trainee ‘Fred’. Those were the days.

  • The barber always put a plank on the chair arms for me to sit on while he cut my hair, I hated it. The Gamekeeper off-licence served kids with bottles of beer for their dad’s and penny packets of peanuts.

  • I lived in Bedwell from 1952 and I was trying to remember all the shops that have been there. Co-op, Hardware, Electrical, Butcher, chemist, Shoe shop, Green grocers, Hairdressers and barber (good place to put a bet on) fish and chips and dont forget Cowleys, with the post office and the Cig machines outside. Hows your memory Valerie.

  • Could this be the only area of Stevenage that effectively got ‘de-pedestrianised’?

  • On Sundays at the shops we always watched the morris dancers. The shops were Fine-Fare, diy shop, fish shop(still the best in Stevenage), butchers, greengrocers, hairdressers and shoe shop and the pub was called the Gamekeeper.
