Brother rescues dog!

Industrial Area circa 1960

By Terri Anderson

On a walk with our dog, Ricki, we (brother Roy, sister Bev and myself)were crossing the proposed site for a cash & carry store? Harvey Bradfield??? (please correct me if I´m wrong), when our dog suddenly disappeared. The site was clear but what had happened was that Ricki had fallen down a bore hole. Roy went down the hole to keep Ricki calm until rescuers came.

Roy (Bub) was awarded a RSPCA award and had his name in the papers.

I also remember the “bailey bridge” that linked Fairlands Way? to the Industrial Area. A wooden slatted bridge which my sister was loath to cross.

  • The Bailey Bridge crossed the A1 (now called London Road) west of Stevenage Football Club, and became part of the A602.
