  • Sgt Toll, he was my Mums uncle. He lived a few doors down to my Nanna Elizabeth Exton, Grove Road, Stevenage.

  • Middle Row. Far right is Mr C Allen, he was my grandfather and a butcher at Shepherds in the High Street.

  • Back row, third from left is my grandfather, Burnard Ashman. He was 6, 2″ and I believe he was a sergeant, having served through WW1 in the Queen Victoria Rifles (London).
    Photo looks to have been taken against the old ‘Fives Court’, which has now been bricked up….Yes I went to Allyene’s, my father too.
