Bath House c. 1948
Stevenage Museum P3468

The bath house was opened in 1913 by Stevenage Urban District Council. At this time many people still did not have a private bathroom. The baths were closed about 1960. The building was earlier the town’s fire station, which is why it has such large doors.

  • I once talked to an old lady who lived in one of the houses in this terrace (ca 1966) and she was 84.  She then apologised, saying she had to go to see her mother in an old peoples’ home.  (How old was her mother?)  Near it was ‘Milly’s Tuck Shop’ a favourite of school kids on their way home (including me).
