In 1962, as part of part of an international exchange of television programmes, ITV aired an American documentary, Postscript to Empire, which took a look at post-World War II Britain, comparing and contrasting the lives of Brits in the docklands of the Isle of Dogs in east London and the new town of Stevenage. The film provoked furious responses from British viewers.
The second half of the film covers life in Stevenage and features a number of well-known figures in the history of Stevenage, including headmaster of Peartree Spring Junior School, Gerry Anstock, bricklayer and later Labour Councillor Fred Millard and Labour Councillor and later Mayor of Stevenage, Alf Luhman.
The documentary is available from the archives of the British Film Institute, as part of their free content.
