ABC Cinema

By Billy Foord

The ABC Cinema has been around since at least 1973 where it made headlines by allowing the town’s cinema-goers to help choose what should be shown there. It was also one of three cinemas in the country to have a special type of Japanese projector that could play 16mm films as well as the standard 3.5mm films. When the new town centre was planned the Development Corporation was keen to include a cinema and so in 1960 a site was allocated for a cinema at the end of Danestrete to the north of the northwest car park.
