Getting measured

Stevenage Girls' Grammar School uniform

By Terri Anderson

SGGS had a bottle green uniform when I attended which could only be purchased via a company, I think it was called Graham Gardner…The representatives of this company attended the school before you started the first year and you were measured for a pleated skirt and blazer. The length of these skirts were a joke and all the girls rolled the waistbands time & time so that they were the current mini length.. mind you, the shirt lasted until they changed the uniform when the school moved to Fairlands.

With the skirts we had beige, fitted shirts ( a nightmare to iron) and a green jumper or cardigan. These could be hand knitted as long as the correct wool was purchased.

Next, sports wear. Green knee length culottes for hockey, lacross etc but for cross-country… green baggy knickers.

Outerwear. Green belted overcoat, with padded lining (removable) and green beret.

Summer Uniform.. two colours, lilac or brandy. There was a choice of a dress or skirt and blouse which also came in white. The rules were you were not allowed to wear the summer uniform until after the easter break and never a combination of summer & winter ie white blouse and green skirt.

Finally, the tie which the older girls wore with a huge knot so that there was only about two inches of tie hanging down.

I wonder just how the parents afforded all this uniform plus tennis racket (won at Bragbury End in a summer fete), hockey boots ( a cousin´s hand me down) gym shoes  the list went on.

This all changed on the move to Fairlands Way… turquoise and blue.

  • I attended this school from 1962 until 1967 when we moved to Cornwall. I remember the uniform so well. Have fond memories of Miss Osborne, our headmistress

  • Oh those enormous summer skirts! I remember using one of mine to make into a dress for me and catsuit for my friend, also a school mate.
