I edited this programme for the club and it was a labour of love.
I interviewed John Barnes, Jimmy Greaves and Andy Gray, designed the whole thing on a Mac computer at home, even did the artwork for some of the ads. We had a regular match programme but essentially did a one-off, full-colour job.
Newcastle were a nightmare to deal with – I found them to be very unprofessional and it was only thanks to a colleague at the Mail on Sunday, Bob Cass, that I got much from them at all.
Very proud of the result. I used pretty much every skill I had, from writing, commissioning and design to typesetting and photo correction.
Victor Green the chairman gave me a free hand and he was delighted with the outcome. And what a day. The whole saga, in fact. Very memorable.
