My Childhood Memories

Linda Parsons

My mum and dad got married and moved from Enfield to Stevenage in 1957, and I was a babe in arms. They moved into a cottage on Ditchmore Lane, and then a few months later moved to Broadwater Crescent, opposite Brook Drive, on the green. Mum and Dad lived there until their deaths.

I started school at Shephall Green School until St Margaret Clitherow’s opened, then went there and later, St Angela’s. I was one of the first pupils attending both St Margaret Clitherow’s and St Angela’s schools on the first days they opened them.

I have so many childhood memories, particularly playing in Shephalbury Park. I used to go there and play on all the swings, slide, etc at the playground end. One specific memory I have is that I was at the top of the slide and a lad came up behind me and I told him I was going first, and he promptly threw over the side from the top!! I also remember that during school holidays, the Council used to run Play Schemes, held at the pavilion in the centre of the Park.
