He had a year at Bandley Hill and then attended Barnwell Sec Mod until 1964. There was a Headmaster and a geography teacher and one was called Mr Attwood and the other was a Mr A...

Dancing days
I would have been about 2 or 3 when myself, my sister Beverley and my two older brothers Roy (12 and Ray 14) would walk from our house in Roebuck to the Old Town… invariably I was carried. We went all together on Saturday morning to tap dancing lessons in the working mens club. Now, I might be confused here, but I believe that there was a siren sounded for probably 12 mid-day and as a kid I was petrified… I always thought it was a ”air raid warnin...

Does anyone remember me?
I haven’t been back to Stevenage for over 50 years but I have to see a friend there tomorrow and decided to go and see my old school Shephalbury Secondary Modern at the same time. I was completely surprised to learn the school no longer exists. I remember my art teacher Mr Trotter (does anyone else remember him?) and Mr Chapman the metal work teacher. I also remember the headmaster Mr Earnshaw. Mrs Godden was a large lady with grey hair and seeme...
Shephall Manor School
A residential school for orphaned Polish children aged 5 to 11 from 1949 to 1954. From 1971 to 1989 it was a school for children with behavioural problems. The school was closed in 1989. [It is not clear why Pauline Maryan implied that Shephall Manor opened in 1971 (as “a school for children with behavioural problems”) and as she is no longer with us, she cannot be asked. The Stevenage Museum blog has a post on the history of Shephall Manor which...

The Cobras performing at Operation Splash in 1950s
‘Operation Splash’ took place in the 1950s to raise money to build a swimming pool at Barclay School. Our Group called ‘The Cobra’s’ took part in this competition. After all the groups had played their two numbers and the judges had retired to consider their verdict we all went to the back of the hall awaiting the announcement of who had won! When the head judge came on stage we all waited with baited breath and were surprised to hear him say tha...

Peartree School
Peartree school was the first school in the newtown and was opened in 1956. My two brothers (Roy and John) and myself were one of the first in the school. Each year we would have this panoramic photo taken in the school playground. The camera was motorised and would rotate 180 degrees taking about 30 seconds to complete. Sometimes (but not in this one) a boy (or girl) on the end would run round the back as the photo was taken and would appear on ...

We are sailing!

My parents went out to buy a washing machine...
This Photo was taken in Made Feld in Bedwell. My parents Alec and Maria Ward decided to buy a washing machine around 1962 and somehow arrived back with a sailing dinghy kit. It was squeezed through the back gate and assembled in the garden. My parents then joined the North Herts sailing club at the Blue Lagoon in Arlesey. I wonder if there are any other sailing club members around who can remember my parents. My mother to this day cannot remember...
Rock'n'Roll is here to stay
Around 1956 there was what proved to be a seismic shift in popular music. The steady diet of radio crooners such as Dickie Valentine, Ruby Murray, Alma Cogan, Joan Regan, Ronnie Carroll, etc. were swept away almost overnight to be replaced by a more raucous, earthy genre which came to be known as Rock’n’Roll. Of course, there was no shortage of detractors of this new style and I can remember very clearly being told that “your stuff won’t last t...
Life in Stevenage during the First World War
It seems that during 1913 and 14 most people continued their usual activities oblivious to the threat of war. Local concerns included damage to the hay crop caused by children trespassing to collect buttercups, the great success of the annual flower show, the “excellent attendance report” recorded by the National Schools, and a series of smoking concerts in the town hall, publicised as promoting harmony. But possibly the establishment of a Steven...
The Austin Family Archive Display
Did you know that the Austin family of Stevenage, now best known as being Funeral Directors, began over 300 years ago as a family building company who built many properties in Stevenage? John Austin, the well known ‘head’ of the family, sadly passed away recently. John wished for his family archive of building plans to be displayed at the Holy Trinity Church in the High Street as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations this year. Local histo...
