Commuting by train & bus to school, 1962 - 1969
Between 1962 and 1969 I commuted to secondary school across North Hertfordshire – between Letchworth and Stevenage, about 10 miles each way, 100 miles a week, 4000 miles a year, over 25000 miles in all. The commute took nearly 90 minutes, each way. The school was The Technical Grammar School, Stevenage, which in 1963 became The Nobel Grammar School, Stevenage. It was a new school – it had opened in 1961 and for the first year of its existence the...

Childhood Memories of Stevenage 1950 - 1963
Origins I was born on 12 March 1950 at the Fox Holes Nursing Home in Pirton, a small village just outside Hitchin. The original post-war nursing home has now been replaced by a modern care home. I was christened as Andrew John, but have always been known as ‘Andy’. My father was Anthony Robson, and he was born in Carshalton, Surrey. My mother was (still is) Vera Robson, nee Hadley. My parents met in the late 1940’s when my Dad was still in the RA...

... I arrived in Stevenage in 1925 aged 2 and a half from Campsea Ash near Wood bridge in suffolk when my father Fred Rawlinson obtained the post of foreman at Fairlands Farm which at that time was owned by mr Riches of Kitswell Shenley who needed it for shooting rites as well as HALF HYDE farm shephall’ ...
Early days of the Mecca dance hall , Stevenage, and my beat group
My group, the Sinners, played at the Mecca on the opening night (see photo) along with Davey Jones & his Lockermen. His pianist was an unknown (then), but I remember talking to Davey backstage and he told me he had this fantastic piano player named Georgie Fame. The SInners frequently played at the Mecca, mainly on a Wednesday night. Once we (Linda Laine & the Sinners) had a recording contract with EMI, we were very much in demand and must have p...

Memory of 6 Bottles
... In the 1920/30s there was a cottage on the right of Sish Lane (a footpath by the side) called 6 bottles because there were 6 bottles incorporated in the upper masonry . I believe the Scripps family lived there. Used to pass it frequently on the big slog up the hill to Fairlands Farm and cottages. A photo would be a miracle as cameras were scarce in those days ...

Memories
... My parents moved to Stevenage in 1958. My mum was pregnant with me and I was born in 1959. We lived in Godfrey close. I went to Ashtree Infant and Junior School and then Heathcote School. I have three sisters, Ruth, Faith and Virginia. I worked briefly for Alloy Sheet Metal in Gunnels Wood Road and later for the Wine Society. I now live in Shefford but still work in Stevenage as a postwoman. ...
Ashtree School
I was part of the 1st year intake of pupils when the school first opened for the start of the accademic year in September 1961. During the first year the playing field was not really ready for use as the grass was still growing and was littered with stones; all the pupils were formed into a line, given buckets, and walked over the field picking up stones. I recognise some of the staff and pupils in your picture from 1965, I have a similar one fro...
Article on Football League Rejection
STEVENAGE ARE NOT GOING UP Green could face League £40,000 ‘sweetener’ probe Stevenage Boro’ lost the biggest match of their short history this week when a High Court judge kicked out their claim for Football League status. And Boro chairman Victor Green could face a Football League probe into allegations that Stevenage asked for £40,000 in ‘sweeteners’ from Torquay towards the end of last season. Boro wanted to take Torquay’s place in the Nation...
Pin Green Water Tower
I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take an image of the water tower in Pin Green. Even more tempting was to use my Quadcopter and get an aerial view. This image is a panoramic composite of 6 images taken with a GoPro Hero 3 Black on board a Phantom 1 Quad. [This post was edited on 18 October 2022, to remove erroneous references to Bedwell, a different area of Stevenage from Pin Green. As a number of commenters have pointed out, the water tower ...

My Memories of Coronation Day 2 June 1953
I was the age of 9 when our nation celebrated the very special day of the coronation for this young woman Princess Elizabeth to become Queen on 2 June 1953, at a very early age of her life. A few folk had the new invention of a black and white television set. Those who did invited their relatives and friends and maybe a few neighbours to come in and watch the coronation and no doubt they would all crowd in the sitting room watching a small tv scr...
Barclay School Reunion 2009
What a wonderful reunion it was on Saturday 9 May 2009 for all us old pupils for a big anniversary celebration of 60 years of the school being open. The event started at 11 o clock. Some of the folks went out onto the school playing field to watch a football match played by the younger boys. At the school there were also other sports being played. As for my friend and I we thought that we would look round the school and see some of the changes. I...
